Silk is frequently replaced by viscose, a semi-synthetic fabric. In the late 19th century, it was created as a result of a silkworm blight that rendered natural silk, which was already highly expensive, nearly impossible for most people to purchase. Because of the way it draped across the body, it quickly gained enormous popularity.
